To call Anja Rubik just a „model” would be a huge understatement. Although she’s been one of the Forbes have highest paid female models for many years now, she can do much more 😉 She published her own “Magazine 25”, she’s the host of the Polish edition of Project Runway, she created her own perfume, “Original” by Anja Rubik. She designed her mini-collections among others for Quazi and Mohito, and she’s been the irrevocable queen of street style for years now 😉 The world went crazy for her in 2007, when despite long waves being in, Anja cut her hair shorter and highlighted it into Scandinavian blonde. Now she’s got 450 000 followers on Instagram, 330 000 fans on Facebook, lives in New York and keeps signing prestigious ad contracts. Although she’s just turned 32, she’s already a worldwide star and could divide her CV between a couple of her peers. What’s the mystery of her success? I’ve decided to give you 5 life tips, which you can learn from her! 😉
1. If you can’t enjoy the small things, it means that you have to wait for the big ones.
Anja Rubik makes it to the top paid models list every year. She could spend her time doing nothing om the French Riviera, or partying in her famous friend’s residences. She’s rather go to Gdynia on a music festival, Opener, have breakfasts in Plac Zbawiciela in Warsawa, or walking her beloved dog, Charlie (a gift from her husband, Sasha Knezevic). When she doesn’t have to work, she meets her mom, or goes on lunch with her frind. She enjoys little rituals: she starts her day with a glass of warm water, after a bath puts Avene crème on her body, and drinks her coffee with honey instead of sugar. Even when she travels, she doesn’t forget her home town, Częstochowa, and if she’s visiting for Christmas, she bakes the cakes. The “big world” being the major part of her work is enough for Anja, so she appreciates the moments in which she can relax, turn her phone off and just be with her family. Take a look at Anja’s Instagram, and you’ll find out that besides photoshoots and red carpet appearances, a top model’s everyday life is full of regular matters. Sometimes she even feels sad – when she’s scrolling down her Instagram news feed, waiting for a plane and being tired, and her friend is having fun on Bali. Remember: the world of show business looks 24h glamour only on social media 😀
2. Always work as if it was the beginning of your career. Success is a conscious choice that needs a plan to be executed.
Anja knows, that there are a couple of factors that contribute to your professional success. Hard work, above all, being systematic and hardworking. That’s what gives you people’s good opinion and provides you next contracts. Rubik knows what she’s talking about: she started as a 15 year old in Milan, and even before she turned 17, she worked with stars such as Kate Moss, or Alexander McQueen. She says herself: “My story wasn’t that I worked in McDonald’s, someone spot me and the next day I was on the runway. It was a conscious decision, a dream, which I’ve been doing everything to achieve”. Anja managed to succeed, as she’s always been very proffessional in her work. She doesn’t have whims on the shoots, focuses on posing and takes care of the atmosphere with the whole crew. She always tries to find out the photographer’s expectations. It’s natural, that noone wants to collaborate with someone who is lazy… or picky 😉 Anja also believes that work doesn’t always have to mean money – sometimes investing in your own development is more important. When interviewed, tha model admits that she happens to get paid EUR 60 for a cover Vougue shoot!
3. You sometimes have to go crazy! Try swimming against the tide, and you’ll find out the surprises life prepared for you.
Always trust your intuition! If Anja hadn’t cut her hair, she’d still probabbly be one of many good models, who we know from Milan or Berlin shows. It’s unbelieveable but it was the hairdresser visit that made her appear on the top list of the best in the branch! Even though her agents were against, Anja proved that she knows how to rebel and win the best paid campaigns thanks to her ahirstyle (like the Chloe one from 2007). And the “Anja bob” is eagerly being copied up to now 🙂 The top model likes to eperiment with her clothes as well. No matter if its about a patterned Pucci dress, Versace cut outs, or a nonchalant motorbike leather jacket – everything that she wears becomes the topic number one on fashion webpages! At work she’s not scared to risk either. She mentions that hosting the Polish edition of Project Runway was a very stressful event for her, but it quickly turned out that it was a great adventure. You can change your life as well! Maybe it’s time for your first colorful winter coat, and then… a new job? 😉 Sometimes choosing a proper outfit or a new haircut is a little beginning of big changes. It all starts in your head, and ends in your hands!
4. Keeping distance from oneself is cool! Try to turn mean comments into a joke and show, that you’re tough!
Haters’ opinions are a part of Anja’s everyday life. “Legs like sticks”, “She’s too thin!” – just a quick look at one of the comments under one of the numerous Internet articles about Anja is enough to notice, that a model’s life isn’t a bed of roses. You can earn millions, have a handsome, loving husband and be just happy, and there will always be someone who’ll hate you for that. What does Rubik do about it? “I don’t memorize gossips about me. Goes in, and goes out.” If someone crosses the line, though, Anja can delete the vulgar comment from her FB page personally. The most important thing is to do what you love and be sure that you’re OK – you can’t raise the whole world. Make the haters puzzled by reacting in a humorous way and remember, you’ve got one life. Use it to give your time to the ones that deserve it, as they’re a support for you. And… That’s what I’ll tell you about in the next paragraph! 😉
5. It’s good to share positive energy. Support your talented friends!
Be grateful for your success and try to give the world something back from you. Good energy has to circulate, in order to be even! 😉 Anja Rubik understands that perfectly and makes use of her popularity. Just going out a couple of times in clothes designed by her best friend, Anthony Vacarello, and the world immediately heard of him. She didn’t care “what others would say” when she agreed to star in a humorous music video, “Chleb” (pl. for “Bread” by Dorota Masłowska, a young and talented writer – Mister D.). Wearing a furry coat, white boots and fishnet tights, she decided to incorporate kitsch and… had great fun doing it! 😀 She also supports Project Runway participants – people say that they all got her top secret phone number and they can call her with work issues 😉 In October, instead of fashionably spending her time in New York, the star is going to be the curator of the Art and Fashion festival in Poznan (workshops for young artists, in which I took part last year). Remember that it’s good to support eachother, as the more talent and positive energy there is in the world, the better place it would be for everyone! If only you have the chance to help someone, do it, and the good karma will come back to you.
