41. DESIGN
Pattern, in other words. The word refers to industrial design, and applied art. It can also describe the design of an item itself. An interior of a place can be proud of a beautiful design, a Marc Jacobs bag, a juice extractor, and the newest type of a car. But the appearance is never the most important feature of a designer product. Steve Jobs, the legendary founder of Apple always emphasized that when it comes to design, how the product WORKS is the most important thing. So it’s best when it’s both pretty, AND useful 😉 The meaning is broad – no wonder then, that its very often misused 😉 People started calling all luxury products „design” ones, only because of their price! But as Marcin Wicha, the author of „How I stopped loving design” book wrote, „design also refers to, for example, a ticket machine is created” 😉 Design has recently even started referring to social problems: balanced design cares for ecology, and environmental design – for the common area. „Designer” has become a synonym for a visionary, and… a celebrity-designer 😉 Karim Rashid, an industrial patterns designer from the US, is as popular as the Rolling Stones, and an architect’s, Phillipe Stark’s products, despite their price, go like hot cakes.
42. CRUISE/RESORT
A between the seasons collection, most often launched in November. It provides work to fashion journalists between fashion weeks, and gives new items of desire to the clients 😉 It’s always a little foretaste of what we’ll all be able to admire in spring. Cruise and resort speak for themselves – the name’s not accidental. Some time ago the idea of these collections was connected with the needs of rich people, who were going for exotic holidays in winter. When summer collections stopped being fashionable, and new ones weren’t available yet, the „extra” ones were coming to help. Created especially for a sea holiday, they very often based on marine trends (white-navy stripes, or sailor’s rope). With time resort shows stopped being entertaining only for the chosen ones, and became as popular as ready to wear shows. For the ones who’re planning to refresh their closed in November this year, the designers offer, among others color blocking (Bottega, Veneta, and Lanvin), ethnic inspirations (Valentino). Such a pace of new trends coming to the stores also has its drawbacks. Raf Simons left Dior, because, as he admitted himself – he couldn’t bear the time pressure. He had to design six collections a year. He very often had… three weeks to complete one!
43. SHOPPER BAG
The name speaks for itself 😉 Characteristic features? Very capacious, one chamber, and relatively short ears, which let you wear it both in hand, and on your elbow. It’s usually rather modest when it comes to details – no linings, no pockets, and unnecessary zippers. You can fit all the world’s treasures in such a bag, that’s why a shopper bag is a must have in every working girl’s closet – including me 😉 It’s a perfect final touch to both business, and casual looks. The shop-home route is definitely too little for a shopper. Zoe Kravitz wears is for the evening, Dior convinces that it can easily be worn instead of a clutch in spring elegant looks. Olivia Palermo, and Miranda Kerr really have a weakness for shoppers. The master of urban chic, Michel Kors is associated with them. The cult model by Louis Vouiton, Neverfull, costs as much as 1340 dollars (the price depends on the size). When your budget isn’t that big, you can purchase one in Zara, for example 😉
44. BRIEF
We can assume that these are the guidelines, the main directions to do something. In advertising: the information that’s essential to create an efficient communication (characteristics of the brand, goal, budget, ideas). It helps its author be in control and work according to the plan. A brief sent by a client to the agency contains suggestions of what the project should consist (what should be in it, how much it should be). „To brief someone” is very often used in today’s creative business. In many places, from a designer’s workshop, to a fashion-publishing house, the word „brief” is used a thousand times a day. It’s thanks to it that on a lookbook session noone discusses what the pic should look like, and working on the new edition of the magazine doesn’t look like being lost in the mist 😉 Press briefing, is a kind of a meeting on which the journalists are told what to write. The word has become extremely popular last years, and PR specialists even joke, that they „brief” their friends on weekend plans ideas 😀
45. LOOKBOOK
A catalogue featuring models of clothes. When it comes to sales, it’s as important as the show itself – it’s easy to create an atmosphere and tell about the idea of the collection on the catwalk, but it’s the lookbook that lets you easily take a close up at a given product, and choose the proper one 😉 In fashion schools students are thought how to create these photos with equal importance as design classes. A lookbook session is most often shot in a studio, on a neutral background. The models pose in a natural and free way, their figures are often photographed from the behind, from the front, and from aside. Being plain is what is different about a lookbook and an editorial, in which the way the clothes are presented depends on the idea of the photographer and the stylist. But on the other hand you couldn’t say that the authors of the best lookbooks aren’t creative. The shoots they create are plain, but they can smuggle an interesting idea into each of them 😉 Kenzo, for example, used metallic frills in the background, and Open Ceremony – exotic plants’ leaves. Paper catalogues are paid more and more attention to. They more often remind professional magazines, and photos of collections are accompanied by interviews, and articles about fashion. You can also associate the word lookbook with the popular lookbook.nu site, in which fashion lovers are able to post their best looks.
